ABOUT THE CHOIR

The White River Youth Choir was founded in the fall of 1994 by Don Ester in an effort to provide young people with a unique opportunity to sing and learn about music. A dedicated and enthusiastic group of interested community members facilitated the process of bringing the organization into existence. Rehearsals began in October of 1994 at Ball State University. The choir is presently in residence at The Muncie Community Civic Center, 520 E. Main, Muncie.

PURPOSE

The primary mission of the White River Youth Choir is to provide young singers with the opportunity to develop and expand their musical understanding and skills through participation in an outstanding choral organization. In addition, membership in the choir develops life skills including commitment, responsibility, cooperation, and self-confidence as well as a sense of pride derived from being an important part of a special organization.

Community choral ensembles focusing on the middle-school age student are virtually non-existent in the United States. While children's choirs and adult ensembles are relatively abundant, the adolescent has been largely ignored. The White River Youth Choir is intended to fill this gap. The White River Youth Choir also provides area music teachers and teachers-in-training an opportunity to observe practical ensemble rehearsal strategies for young singers in a realistic setting.
